Under the shelter of the “Cerro del Tepozteco” and with a story that appeals to any visitor, this town will attract you by its mystique and its warm climate.  Steep cobbled streets distributed in eight neighborhoods that still original from times of the colony-trace, this population will surprise you with its multiple traditions including the "chinelos" a fun dance and rituals of purification.

 

Tepoztlan, a place to meditate and find nature in the State of Morelos located just 17 kilometers from the city of Cuernavaca, it is a mystical magical town whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "place of the copper axe".  Steep streets and other multiple charms as the Grand Cerro del Tepozteco and their traditions are well enjoyed.

The "dance of the Chinelos" is the main attraction of the Carnival (in February). The word "chinelo" derives from the "slippers" which are a kind of Muslim slippers as well as characteristic tunic used in these dances seems to derive from the old Arab textile traditions. Tepoztlan is famous for developing “Amate paper” obtained from the bark of these trees abundant in the region.  You can also find  handicrafts known as “little houses” of "pochote tree" and sculptures carved in "pochocatl" thorn or wild cotton tree.  You can find these “little houses” on sale Sunday Market in Revolution Street.


Places to Visit

 

Parque Nacional El Tepozteco

 

The Park is a protected natural area of 24,000 hectares where you can enjoy activities such as rappel, observation of flora and wildlife photography. Pyramid of Tepozteco The pre-hispanic shrine was built by the Xochimilcas that inhabited the region between 1150 and 1350 in honour of  Ometochtli-Tepoztecatl: God of Pulque (an ancient drink product of fermenting sap of the agave maguey cactus) associated with fertility, the harvest and wind. The importance of this temple was such that even came to receive pilgrims from Chiapas State and Guatemala.  From the heights, you have an incredible view of the village that invites deep reflection.


Temple and ex-convent of the Nativity

 

This is a beautiful building made by indigenous under the direction of Dominican friars in the second half of the 16th century.  It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Nativity has an immense Atrium, Open Chapel, Temple and Convent. Surprise the simple facade “plateresque” style showing the patina on its rusty relief sculptures of the Virgin Mary, Domingo de Guzmán and Catherine of Siena. Inside you may visit its Museum with paintings of 500 years of antiquity, documents and bathroom of the friars.  From the first floor you can have a wonderful view of great Coordillera multifaceted that shelters the town.
